I love finding good deals on food. Safeway is still feeling the effects of my Chex cereal buy out. Today we bought two cases of 180 black velvet apricots for five dollars each. We brought them home and went to work canning them. It was easy because we didn't have to remove the peel. All of the kids helped sort and cut off bad spots. I love when they help with preparing the food to preserve. It is so good for them to learn these types of skills. Steve pitched in while I fed Amelia and bottled some, too. In all we bottled 25 quarts of apricots.
Black velvet apricots were described on one website as "the love child of a plum and an apricot". They have the texture and flavor of a plum, with the size and fuzziness of an apricot. The liquid in the jars is a beautiful dark red color. It was a fun and productive day.
After we finished canning, Alexis made hamburgers and ice cream. It all turned out delicious.
